However, these can raise blood pressure, so it’s important to use them cautiously and as directed. Consult a doctor if your symptoms are severe, worsen after a week, or include high fever (over 101°F or 38.3°C), difficulty breathing, chest pain, severe headache, or a stiff neck. These could indicate a more serious illness requiring medical intervention. Children and the elderly are particularly vulnerable to complications from the common cold, so seeking medical advice early is crucial for them.

Preventing the spread of colds relies on good hygiene practices. Frequent handwashing with soap and water, or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer, is crucial. Avoid touching your face, especially your eyes, nose, and mouth, as this can easily transmit the virus. Cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue or your elbow, and dispose of used tissues properly. If you’re sick, stay home to avoid spreading the virus to others. Getting enough sleep, eating a healthy diet, and managing stress can also boost your immune system and reduce your susceptibility to colds.

Exploring Alternative Therapies

Some people find relief from cold symptoms using alternative therapies. These include things like acupuncture, aromatherapy (using essential oils like eucalyptus or peppermint), and herbal remedies like echinacea. While some studies suggest potential benefits, more research is needed to confirm their effectiveness.
